Empire Engineers. These guys are obviously very helpful for your artillery, as being on the battlefield and assigned to one of your cannons or mortars can allow you to re-roll one scatter/artillery dice roll. This ability can mean the difference between life and death for your expensive guns and thus should be used. In this article, I will hope to show you how to make the best use of your engineers.

ADVANTAGES:
· Allows you to re-roll artillery/scatter dice rolls
· Relatively cheap
· Has access to powerful weaponry (repeater pistol, repeater handgun and hochland long rifle)
· It counts as an extra crewman, so you can afford to lose crew members during the battle

DISADVANTAGES:
· Takes up a hero choice, which in small games could mean you have to lose another hero to make room for it
· If you give it the special weaponry it becomes expensive. If you take one with hochland long rife then it costs the same as a mortar
· It cannot use its benefits for a helblaster volley gun.
· As it is an extra crewman it will die with the crew if the artillery piece blows up
· It cannot fire its weapon and use its re-roll ability in the same turn.

Before you select an engineer for your army, think about the scenario in mind, how you want to play the game and what other units you have in your army. If you are playing the rear guard mission, or the halt the tide scenario, where you would likely take multiple artillery pieces, taking an engineer would help immensely in the effectiveness of your shooting phase. However, if you choose a fast army with lots of knights and combat units taking artillery and an engineer would be stupid as you wouldn’t have that many shooting phases to use your artillery to its full effectiveness. Also, if you intend to play defensively, with lots of missile units and artillery and a few blocks of infantry an engineer or even two would help as you would want to cause as much damage as possible to allow your other units to hold out.
